Statement on current foam regulations

firefighter

We have been recently receiving regular requests from our customers for a statement on the current regulatory status of the use of C6-AFFFs.

As such, we have prepared the following summary statement and hope this will be useful in answering some of your questions and concerns. However, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we would be happy to help.

Re: EU REACH and UK HSE regulations on the use of C6-AFFFs

Current EU and draft UK regulations allow the continued use of C6 foams. EU REACH published their regulations on the 2nd October 2025, while the UK HSE completed a 6 month consultation period in February 2026 on their preferred approach to PFAS in firefighting foam - which aligns closely with the EU legislation.

Both the EU and UK have set out transition (derogation) periods for different sectors before the move from AFFFs to fluorine free foams is required. It is only at the date stated or conclusion of the transition period that a change to fluorine free becomes mandatory.

The sector-specific transition periods for both the UK and EU are outlined in the table below:

FCstatement table1

These transition periods will be reviewed nearer the dates stated and may be extended further.

Please note that all Aberdeen Foam AFFFs purchased after 2015 are qualified as C6-AFFFs and are therefore still allowed to be used until the dates outlined above.

Aberdeen Foam AFFFs also comply with IMO Resolution MSC.1/Circ.532(107).
