Update: UK HSE begins consultation period

UK firefighting foam regulations update: HSE consultation period, August 2025 - February 2026


Introduction

The UK Health and Safety Executive has just entered a 6 month consultation period about their preferred approach to PFAS in firefighting foams.

Essentially, this aligns with the new EU legislation which is expected to enter into force in 2026. The main differences are allowing a 5 year transition period for civilian ships and a similar period for UK military installations.

The HSE proposes that Offshore installations and Seveso III/COMAH sites will have a 10 year transition period before it is necessary to change to a Fluorine Free Foam.
