This Month Tom Cortina from the Fire Fighting Foam Coalition (FFFC) submitted a letter to the German Competent Authorities for REACH on behalf of association members in relation to the preparation of an RMO-analysis for Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), its salts and precursors. The letter focuses on the formulations of Class B firefighting foam which are proven to be the most effective method of extinguishing flammable liquid fires.PFHxA is only a possible break down product from foams which contain fluorotelomers and extensive data has found that it is not carcinogenic and that the chronic toxicity is low.As such, there is no danger to the wider environment as no threat is posed by the potential breakdown product PFHxA.There is currently no definitive evidence to suggest fluorine free foams are more advantageous than Class B foams. In fact neither their physical characteristics, fire performance nor their biological degradation data support the move to this type of product. This document details appropriate methods of containment and disposal of fluorine containing foams as well as the use of fluorine free foams for testing and training.
