ENQUIRE TODAY

Modern, high quality foam concentrates are very stable, and are excellent candidates for long term storage with minimal or no effects on performance.

Most reputable foam concentrate manufacturers offer at least a 10 year life for products correctly stored in original containers with the manufacturer's seal still intact (i.e. unopened). However, the performance of a fire fighting foam concentrate can be compromised by the following factors:

  • Dilution

  • Contamination
  • Extremes of temperature

  • System failure

For these reasons, annual testing is essential and is in fact recommended by many international standards such as NFPA 11: 2021 and BS EN 13565-2: 2018.

"At least annually, an inspection shall be made of foam concentrates... for evidence of excessive sludging or deterioration.

Sample of concentrates shall be sent to the manufacturer or qualified laboratory for quality condition testing."

Each Foam Concentrate Test Report assesses the following properties:

Appearance

How the Foam Concentrate sample looks - i.e. visually checking for colour, sediment and homogeneity.

Specific Gravity

The ratio of a given value of liquid, compared to the weight of an equal volume of water.

pH

The alkalinity or acidity of the Foam Concentrate sample.  Tested at 20°C and according to International Standards BS EN 1568 1-4: 2018 Part 7.

Viscosity

The thickness of the Foam Concentrate sample in comparison with water.  Tested at 20°C.

Surface Tension

An indication of how well the foam will spread across the surface of a fire in use.  Tested at 20°C and according to International Standards ASTM D-971: 2012 & ISO 304: 1985.

Sediment

The measure of insoluble or particulate matter in the Foam Concentrate sample.

Freeze Point

The temperature at which the Foam Concentrate sample changes from a liquid to a solid phase (i.e. crystallises).

Expansion Ratio

The ratio of foam produced compared with the volume of concentrate used, e.g. a ration of 7:1 means 1L of Foam Concentrate produces 7L of Foam

This test is conducted using a UK Defence Standard branch-pipe and in accordance with International Standards BS EN 1568 1-4: 2018 Annex G & NFPA 11: 2021 Annex D.

25% Drainage Time

The speed at which water drains from the foam; also referred to as a Quarter Drainage Test, this is a critical indication of a foam's stability.

This test is conducted using a UK Defence Standard branch-pipe with an application rate of 5L per minute at 5.5 bar (AFFF Foams) or 7.0 bar (AR & Protein Foams).  The test is conducted in accordance with International Standards BS EN 1568 1-4: 2018 Annex G & NFPA 11: 2021 Annex D.

Fire Extinguishment Performance

An indicative test of the foam's performance in extinguishing fires using a small scale test pan.

Please note

The results obtained are based entirely on the samples sent, which may or may not be representative.

We strongly recommend that results are compared with the original manufacturer's specifications.  If they do not match, it may indicate an issue with any of the following:

  • Contamination

  • Evaporation

  • Dilution

  • Degradation

  • Decomposition

GUIDE: How to take a Foam Concentrate sample

Sampling from a tank:

If a Foam Concentrate is contaminated or degraded, samples taken from the top and bottom of a storage tank are likely to have different physical properties. For this reason we recommend concentrates should not be circulated prior to samplling.

Normally, two samples per storage tank are taken

  • One sample from the bottom (1 litre)
  • One sample from the top (1 litre)

If you have access to a tank sampling jar with removable bung, we recommend taking an additional 1 Litre sample from the middle of the tank.

The contents of a tank should not be circulated where dilution or contamination of the concentrate is suspected to have occurred. We also recommend that the tank is labelled with "Awaiting Foam Test Results" and the date that the sample was taken.

NB: it is important that sludge, sediment, rust, scale, etc is removed before collection of the bottom sample. To do this draw off at least 5-10 litres of product before taking a sample.

Once the samples have been taken, the tank should not be circulated until the samples have been tested and the results obtained. However, if it is only possible to take one sample, then circulate the tank to obtain a "composite sample" prior to taking a 1 litre sample.

Sampling from the bottom of a tank:

When taking a sample from the bottom of a foam storage tank, it is important that any sludge, sediment, rust, scale, etc is removed before collection of the sample. To do this, draw off at least 5-10 litres of product before taking a sample.

Sampling from a Drum:

  • Take a 1 litre sample from the top of the drum
  • Vigorously shake the drum and take an additional 1 litre sample

DOWNLOADS: Generic Safety Data Sheets

It is very important that you include a Safety Data Sheet with your returned samples. Couriers need them as part of the shipping documentation and our laboratory uses them to review results against foam manufacturer's specifications.

If you don't have a copy of your manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet for your samples, you can either contact your Foam Supplier; or download generic examples of Safety Data Sheets from the links below, which will be sufficient for our courier's needs:

What should I send my samples in?

Your foam samples should be sent in clean, tightly closed plastic bottles and in suitable packaging to minimise the risk of damage in transport.

Some guidelines to help:

  • Virtually any plastic bottle is fine to use, but they must be CLEAN before filling and have a well fitted and tightly closed lid.
  • We would recommend sealing the bottle inside a plastic bag to prevent spills or leakage.
  • Package the bottle(s) well in a sturdy cardboard box with suitable and plentiful packing material.
  • To save on postage costs, do not use bottles that are unnecessarily large or send more foam concentrate that is required, eg 1 Litre for a Foam Concentrate Test.

Why do I need to have my foam tested?

Modern, high quality foam concentrates are very stable, and are excellent candidates for long term storage with minimal or no effects on performance.

Most reputable foam concentrate manufacturers offer at least a 10 year life for products correctly stored, and in original containers with the manufacturer's seal still intact (unopened). However, the performance of a fire fighting foam concentrate can be compromised by the following factors:

What types of Foam Concentrate can be tested?

We can test virtually any type of Foam Concentrate including:

  • AFFF
  • AR-AFFF
  • FP
  • FFFP
  • AR-FFFP
  • HI-EX
  • Class A
  • F3

If unsure, please contact us.

How often should I test my foam?

As recommended by international standards NFPA 11: 2021 and BS EN 13565-2:2018, foam concentrates should be inspected and tested at least annually as part of your fire fighting foam maintenance programme.

What are the differences between Foam Concentrate, Produced Foam and IMO Testing?

Foam Concentrate Test Report

The purpose of a Foam Concentrate Test Report is to evaluate if the sample of Foam Concentrate tested is in satisfactory condition and, most importantly, to confirm whether the foam remains within the manufacturer's specification from when it was first manufactured.

Produced Foam Test Report

The purpose of a Produced Foam Test Report is to determinate the suitability and accuracy of a Foam System's proportioning and induction equipment and whether it is working and being operated properly.

  • For further details, please click here.

IMO Foam Concentrate Testing

IMO Foam Concentrate Testing is similar to our standard Foam Concentrate Test in that it evaluates if the sample of Foam Concentrate is in satisfactory condition. However, it also evaluates some additional properties and is carried out according to the exact specifications stated in IMO Standard IMO MSC.1 / Circ. 1312, designed for Marine Vessels.

  • For further details, please click here.

Why is it important to agitate your foam before sampling?

It is important to agitate your foam to ensure that any particulates that may have fallen to the bottom of the container are re-animated, helping to ensure we get a representative sample of the foam in your container.

In addition, depending on how you store your foam, water or debris might have entered the container. If you take a sample from the top of the container before agitating it, you maybe taking a diluted sample which could give a false result during testing.

Once you have agitated your foam container and taken your sample, please always wait to receive your Foam Test Report before doing anything else to your foam or foam system.
