Produced Foam Testing
Produced Fire Fighting Foam Testing is designed to determine the suitability and accuracy of a Foam System's proportioning and induction equipment.
All results are compared against the acceptable parameters quoted in Internationally recognised Foam Standards NFPA 11: 2021 and BS EN13565-1: 2019.
Our Service offers:
Worldwide Testing: we currently offer testing to over 30 countries worldwide |
||
Express Testing: We offer 24hr Emergency Testing, or standard 5-day turnaround services to meet your needs
Clear results: Our Produced Foam Test Reports use plain English to give you a clear & understandable result
Reliable: with over 30 years’ experience of foam testing, ours is a service you can rely on!
The purpose of a Produced Foam Test is to determine the suitability and accuracy of a foam system's proportioning and induction equipment. Our reports show the calculated % induction of the sample provided compared against Internationally recognised Foam Standards NFPA 11: 2021 and BS EN 13565-1: 2019.
Testing your Produced Foam regularly helps ensure that it is correctly proportioned and although Foam proportioning systems are reliable and are subject to regular rigorous inspections and maintenance, it is still recommended that:
"At least annually, all foam systems shall be thoroughly inspected and tested for correct operation." |
|
NFPA 11, 2021 Edition, 13.2.1.1 |
Please note:
Although you can test your Produced Foam and Foam Concentrate individually, we would always recommend conducting a combined Produced Foam & Foam Concentrate Test in order to ensure that not only is your system inducted correctly, but that your Foam Concentrate is fit for purpose.

GUIDE: How to take a Produced Foam sample
Produced Foam samples should be taken from as close as possible to the point where the foam reaches the designated discharge area.
Before taking a sample, activate the foam system long enough to remove standing columns of water (which otherwise would contribute to a diluted Produced Foam sample). Only sample when the system is in equilibrium.
Please ensure that you provide at least:
- 1 Litre of Produced Foam
- 1 Litre of Foam Concentrate
- 1 Litre of Induction Water
Collecting samples from nozzles, monitors & overhead sprinklers:
- Collect the Produced Foam sample from the point of impact in the discharge area
Collecting samples from foam pourers:
- Insert the sample container into the edge of the Produced Foam stream and take a sample
GUIDE: How to take a Foam Concentrate sample
Sampling from a tank:
If a Foam Concentrate is contaminated or degraded, samples taken from the top and bottom of a storage tank are likely to have different physical properties. For this reason we recommend concentrates should not be circulated prior to samplling.
Normally, two samples per storage tank are taken
- One sample from the bottom (1 litre)
- One sample from the top (1 litre)
If you have access to a tank sampling jar with removable bung, we recommend taking an additional 1 Litre sample from the middle of the tank.
The contents of a tank should not be circulated where dilution or contamination of the concentrate is suspected to have occurred. We also recommend that the tank is labelled with "Awaiting Foam Test Results" and the date that the sample was taken.
NB: it is important that sludge, sediment, rust, scale, etc is removed before collection of the bottom sample. To do this draw off at least 5-10 litres of product before taking a sample.
Once the samples have been taken, the tank should not be circulated until the samples have been tested and the results obtained. However, if it is only possible to take one sample, then circulate the tank to obtain a "composite sample" prior to taking a 1 litre sample.
Sampling from the bottom of a tank:
When taking a sample from the bottom of a foam storage tank, it is important that any sludge, sediment, rust, scale, etc is removed before collection of the sample. To do this, draw off at least 5-10 litres of product before taking a sample.
Sampling from a Drum:
- Take a 1 litre sample from the top of the drum
- Vigorously shake the drum and take an additional 1 litre sample
DOWNLOADS: Generic Safety Data Sheets
It is very important that you include a Safety Data Sheet with your returned samples. Our couriers need them as part of the shipping documentation and our laboratory uses them to review results against foam manufacturer's specifications.
If you don't have a copy of your manufactuer's Safety Data Sheet for your samples, you can either contact your Foam Supplier; or download generic examples of Safety Data Sheets from the links below, which will be sufficient for our courier's needs:
Safety Data Sheets:
- Synthetic Foam, e.g. AFFF, AFFF-LF, AR-AFFF
- Protein Foam, e.g. FP, FFFP
- Fluorine Free Foam, e.g. F3
- Miscellaneous Foam, e.g. HI-EX, Class A

Why do I need to have my foam tested?
The purpose of a Produced Foam Test is to determine the suitability and accuracy of a foam system's proportioning and induction equipment. How often should I test my foam?
As recommended by international standards NFPA 11: 2021 and BS EN 13565-1:2019, foam systems should be inspected and tested for correct operation at least annually as part of your fire fighting foam maintenance programme.
What are the differences between Produced Foam, Foam Concentrate and IMO Testing?
Produced Foam Test Report
The purpose of a Produced Foam Test Report is to determinate the suitability and accuracy of a Foam System's proportioning and induction equipment and whether it is working and being operated properly.
Foam Concentrate Test Report
The purpose of a Foam Concentrate Test Report is to evaluate if the sample of Foam Concentrate tested is in satisfactory condition and, most importantly, to confirm whether the foam remains within the manufacturer's specification from when it was first manufactured.
- For further details, please click here.
IMO Foam Concentrate Testing
IMO Foam Concentrate Testing is similar to our standard Foam Concentrate Test in that it evaluates if the sample of Foam Concentrate is in satisfactory condition. However, it also evaluates some additional properties and is carried out according to the exact specifications stated in IMO Standard IMO MSC.1 / Circ. 1312, designed for Marine Vessels.

Why is it important to activate the Foam System before sampling?
Before taking a sample, it is important to activate the foam system long enough to remove standing columns of water - as otherwise your Produced Foam sample could be diluted. You should only sample the system when it is in equilibrium.
